Godaddy Ending First-Come First-Served Backorders

Posted 10th April 2009 at 05:49 PM by Evan
According to DomainNameWire Godaddy has informed them that they will now charge their usual fee per backorder-- but, they will now allow multiple customers to backorder the same domain.

From our experience, Godaddy was always the least likely registrar to capture a dropping domain-- that is, until the recent ICANN fees per returned domain were instituted. Since then, we have had much better results with Godaddy. In fact, Godaddy backorder captures became a tremendous value at less than $20 per capture.

That was then, and this is now- so it appears that any quality names that Godaddy captures via backorders will now be hotbeds for competition. Usually competition is good, but not when one is attempting to capture expiring domains.

I have to scratch my head a bit as I wonder why they would wait until now to make this dramatic business model adjustment? Since domain tasting has been all but obliterated, more names can be hand registered than ever before. We are 10 for 12 thus far in the last week -- that's 10 successful backorders out of 12 attempts. We would be lucky to get 1:100 during the domain tasting days.

One way I can see Godaddy auctions taking off is if they acquire more registrars, and if they partner with more registrars -- especially those they can attain exclusive partnerships with. NameJet has such an advantage due to their partnerships, so their place is less affected by industry matters such as changes in domain tasting. NameJet will get the older domains especially since they are in bed with NetSol.

R.I.P. No Competition Captures at Godaddy
